Mrs. Alice Jane Hodge Bascom

was born Dec. 2, 1855, at Holly Springs, Dallas County, Arkansas, the daughter of Dr. George DeKalb and Mrs. Susan Sorrells Hodge who removed to Prescott, Arkansas in March 1876.

Mrs. Bascom was educated in a college in Franklin Tennessee and was married in June 1877 to Thomas H. Bascom, the publisher of the Prescott Clipper. Mr. Bascom died several years ago. To this union were born three daughters and a son, George Bascom who died at Cincinnati, Ohio in 1929, and was buried in Jacksonville, Fla. One daughter, Mrs. Camilla Anderson resides in Miami Florida, and Miss Ruth Bascom and Bunn Sufton teach in the Jacksonville schools. Mrs. Bascom was considered one of the most beautiful girls in Prescott. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was a friendly, Christian character, loved by all who knew her.

Mrs. Bascom's father, Dr. Hodge was a prominent physician in Prescott, having his office on West Main St. He died in 1877. Mrs. Hodge passed away in 1887.

Mrs. Bascom operated the Bascom hotel, which was located on the corner of East Main and First Streets on the Allen Hotel block, from 1887 to August 1905 with the exception of the year 1893 when she operated the old Winters hotel on West First and Walnut streets, The following, and many others, were patrons of the Bascom house when Mrs. Bascom operated it: Fred Allsopp, who later became business manager of the Arkansas Gazette; former sheriff, Ed Hood; Capt. VR. White; Sam T. White; Wat W. White; Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Greeson; J.C. Steger; J.D, Gathright; Clarence and Howard Shumaker; Mayor R.P. Hamby; C.C. Berryman; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Friganza; Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Teal; Mrs. John H, Arnold; Mr. and Mrs. Tracy R. Thomas; Mr. and Mrs. John A. Davis; Mack Spears; Joe A. Bailey; Dr. W.R. Bathurst; W.T. Hart.

After leaving Prescott, in 1905, Mrs. Bascom resided in Little Rock several years before moving to Florida. She died at her home in Jacksonville in November 1935.

She is survived by her three daughters; two grandchildren, D.B. Anderson of Miami, and Jane Sutton of Jacksonville; and a great granddaughter, Patricia Anderson of Miami; also a sister, Mrs. Nora Baird of Big Springs, Texas.
