Enoree Young Blakely


was born July 10, 1859, in Clinton, South Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Blakely and his wife, Eliza (Young) Blakely. Eliza Young Blakely is known to have had one brother, James, who married Emma Dalrymple. Thomas Blakely and his wife, came from South Carolina to what is now Nevada County, Arkansas about the year 1870. They had only two children: (1) Irvin Henry who married Mary Alice Flowers, daughter of Needham Ingram Flowers and his wife, Mary Catherine (Satterwhite) Flowers. (2) Enoree Young.

Enoree Y. Blakely was reared in Jackson Township, Nevada County, Arkansas. He attended the schools of the community and later went to school in St. Louis, Missouri. Returning from St. Louis, he worked in a little country store near his home, the proprietor of which was his cousin, Mr. J. Calhoun Young. He also worked on the farm at intervals.

About 1886, he met Miss Cornelia Simpson Griffin of Bingen, Hempstead County, Arkansas who was visiting at the home of her cousin, Barney Young, in Nevada County. Barney Young was also a cousin to Enoree Y. Blakely but Cornelia and Enoree were not related. On June 6, 1888, E. Y. Blakely and Cornelia S. Griffin were married by a presbyterian minister at the home of her parents in Bingen. She was born Oct. 28, 1868, the daughter of Sanders Billingsley Griffin (b. Oct. 31, 1836-d. Nov. 28, 1905) and his wife, Alice Rejina (Dalrymple) Griffin (b. 1643 in Mulberry, S.C.). They were married in Mulberry S.C. in 1864. Both died in Texarkana, Ark., and were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery at that place.

E. Y. Blakely was elected sheriff of Nevada County in 1898. It was then that he moved his family to Prescott, the county seat. After retiring from the Sheriff's office, he became connected with the Nevada County, HDwe. Company. Other members of that firm were Messrs Owen Richmond McDaniel and Philip S. Harrell. Mr. Blakely was in this business at the time of his death, April 18, 1951. He was a member of Prescott's School Board for a number of years.

Both Mr. and Mrs. E.Y. Blakely were members of the Missionary Baptist church. She joined at Nashville, Howard County, Arkansas, Aug. 1892. He joined at Prescott, Arkansas, Jan. 1, 1901.
