The records that I have say that Jack or James Jackson Sampson married Margaret Barksdale. I have that her father was Elihue Barksdale and her mother was Dorothy Ann May. Elihue and Drothy were married in 1857 and Margaret was born in 1866. Margaret did have a sister named Louisa who was born in 1864.

Elihue then married Sarah J. Sampson who was the daughter of J. H. Sampson and Louisa Brock. some of this was from a family bible and some from census records.

I believe that the picture Jimmy's grandmother is of Louisa Brock not Barksdale. Due to family history, from relatives as well as records, it would be impossible for her to be Louisa Barksdale and Jimmy Sampson's grandmother. Louisa Brock, however, was his grandmother.

The picture is of Louisa Barksdale and she is my, Jimmy Sampson's great grandmother. She was Margaret Barksdale Sampson's mother.

I visited my dads gravesite this past weekend. The marker was missing. Its suppose to be beside my grandmothers. His name is Loren Clinton Todd, Jr. my grandmothers is Creola Warren.

My mother (Mary Ruth Hamilton Schulz) was born in Emmet in 1921, but moved to TX around 1924. My grandfather (Hinton Hunter Hamilton Sr.) was the son of CW Hamilton and Bettie Bright Hamilton. My grandmother (Earlis Alva Smith) was the daughter of James Franklin Smith and Dovie May Bennett Smith.

I have been attempting to trace the family. I have hit a dead-wall concerning James Franklin Smith. He was born in Nevada Co. and in a census says his father was born in Mississippi and his mother in Arkansas. Would anyone have any information about his parents? Does anyone have any information regarding a family of Smiths - Father possibly named Frank, mother Mary A., son Walter Wesley, born Sept 1890, daughter Blanch, born 1892 (I think)? Aud Hooker was my grandfather. Chester was my uncle. My mother, Myra June Hooker Mouser was the third child of Aud and Clara Blevins Hooker. If you were in touch with Chester before he was killed, or his son Jerry I am sure they could give you some information. I was raised in Oregon and know little of the Hooker lineage.

I have been told a story of a man that was found petrified and turned into wood noone knew how old he was or even who he was..and was told he was put in the court house there in prescott..If anyone has any information about this please let me know..Thank you Lori

"Old Mike" was a resident of the local mortuary. As I heard the story he had been found dead and embalmed but not buried. No one claimed the body until the allotted time had passed. When the time came to bury him, the story was picked up by the national news service. His family saw the story and claimed the body.

I remember as a child, being dared to touch the "petrified man". I don't know who was more petrified though.

I always thought it was a fascinating story that after all those years of not knowing what happened to himk, his family finally found him.

Old Mike was found dead in the city park in 1911. He was embalmed by the local mortuary. Efforts were made to identify him, but they were unsuccessful. He was given the name "Mike". Many people visited the mortuary to view Old Mike over the years. Finally, he was ordered buried by the state in 1975. His identity was still unknown. A small grave marker with the name Mike marks his grave in DeAnn Cemetery.

Would you happen to know the family name that claimed him? Reason I am asking is because my mother at one point was told he possibly could be related to her..that is why I am trying to track down this information.

I have a newspaper article from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette dated October 20, 2005 that tells the story of Old Mike. According to the article, several people viewed the body in the hope he was a lost relative, but no one claimed the corpse. Finally, on May 12, 1975, Old Mike was buried at the insistence of the state. Cornish Mortuary bought a plot in DeAnn Cemetery and provided the casket and flowers. Rev. Jerry Westmoreland conducted the graveside service. The mortuary also provided a tombstone which simply reads "Old Mike", Died August 21, 1911.

The article also has a picture of "Old Mike" taken in 1921.

As a youngster (I am now 70), we lived in Shreveport but my grandparents,

David Asberry McKinnon and Nora Campbell McKinnon lived in Prescott. Most

trips to Prescott were for a Reunion or Funeral. My father would take me to Cornish Funeral Home to see Old Mike. My grandfather told me that he was a drifter and was found dead in the park near East Main St., on a park bench, just the other side of the railroad tracks. No one ever claimed the body. I was grown before the State made them bury him. I thought he was a black man but he was not. He looked a whole lot like an Indian and stood in a big pine box.

My grandparents took my sister and me to see Ol' Mike at the Cornish Mortuary on more than a couple of occasions. I recall opening the wooden box he had been propped-up in, whereupon there was Ol' Mike, hand near a pull string for the light that was on, leaving the impression he just turned the light on. Weird.

When I was a teenager, I went to see the petrified man, in Prescott, I thought he was at some funeral home down town, I think they called him Uncle Mac.That has been about 42 years ago, I did have a pic.

I don't have any further information regarding Malvin and Retha. Have you ordered copies of their death certificates to see who provided biographical details? Since Malvin outlived Retha, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that Malvin was the informant for Retha's details; although, if she (or they) had any children, one of them might have been the informant. But with Retha gone, who was the informant for Malvin's details?

P.S. If you get death certificates, perhaps you'll find mention of which funeral home arranged their funerals, if any. Contact them and see if they have a copy of obituaries in their files which may list next of kin and friends. There was no obituary. She was J.H. Sampson's mother and she came with them from Dalton, Georgia to Honeyville, AR. Honeyville was later changed to Cale, AR. They came here around 1860-1861. They were buried in Morris Cementary.

I am interested in any information concerning the village at Moscow, what stores and where they were, who was a part of the community, and the living then. I am a former resident of that community and am writing a book on that period of time and the time of the battle there.

It seems that several years ago I came across some information on Moscow when doing some research on little known Civil War battles/skirmishes in SW Arkansas. I know there are some short references in the Official Records. You may also want to do a search on the Southwest Ark. Regional Archives website www.southwestarchives.com/. They are a wealth of information for the area. I also saw a pretty good early map at the Ark. History Comm. in Little Rock several years back with building sites of Moscow. I recently heard a story about a Nevada County Sheriff that was arrested around 1920 for domestic battery. He was held at the Hempstead County Jail for trial. In my private email to you I erred. The cemetary I was referring to is the Lebanon Cemetary located wnw of Nevark. I ran a search on TerraServer and found it. It is less than a mile west of Nevark and about a half mile north of the present day highway.

Mr. Moreland died in 1861 and is burried here. This is also probably where Berry Beard is burried.

Like to learn as much as I can about my family history. Finess Ewing Sherrill and William Kitchens were Confederate soldiers from there and Daniel J. Smith was a Judge 1860-1862. Maude Lily Kitchens was the mother of my father Otis Theodore Bourns. She appears to have come from De Queen area in/near Sevier county. She married George Monroe Bourns from the same area around the turn of the 19th century. Believe were rural farmers, although all of Maude's & George's children became educators later in Texas, OK, Colorado and California and Little Rock area. Otis' brothers were named William and Edward. There may have been one other, but he was deceased by 1900.

I don't think Otis and Isaac were brothers. The censuses indicate Otis had two brothers--William and Edward. He may have had one other brother, but that one was deceased by 1900. Maybe they were cousins.

I know that Providence Azor Cemetery in Bodcaw and Clevet Springs cemeteries are African-Americans. A majority of my ancestors are buried in them; with Azor being the main one through Hicks Funeral Home. Frederick Loudermilk (I believe) is the care taker of the Azor Cemetery.

I know of one, it is in the community of Boughton, Ar. The name is Washington Hill Cemetery it is off hwy 67 turning left onto Rd #220 going north about 1.5 miles, the cemetery is on the left.

The oldest grave there that can be read is dated 1894. We believe there are some older but parts are so overgrown that it is impossible to get in thare and look.

This cemetery is affiliated with The Macedonia Baptist Church in Boughton.

There are others that are also affiliated with Black Churches in the Nevada co area.

If you read the description on the cemetery list you will find the one that are Black. Union Grove and Sweet Home are Black and a part of DeAnn cemetery is Black

never heard of the cemeteries listed. in the area aroung prescott most blacks are buried at washington hill in boughton, snell in emmet, deann in prescott, craven has a few-most unmarked. then there is green hill and antioch near blevins and the name of the one in okolona escapes me. deann has 3 sections-the old/early, then the segregated section where blacks are buried and still are if you already have a lot and the "new" section that is intergrated. There's another around Laneburg, but I know little about lower nevada county

Found 3 Sandefur children listed as buried at Sandefur Cemetery, is there any hope of finding any death records at a funeral home in or around Nevada County.

Looks like two of the children were twins but not enough information to confirm that they are. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about checking this out?

The only funeral home in Prescott (Nevada Co.) was Cornish Funeral Home and the present owner told me several years ago that he threw away all of the old records when he bought the funeral home. I couldn't believe it, but evidently he did it. He bought the funeral home in Hope ( Hempstead Co.) also, so the records for that are not likely to be around. If you locate any, please let me know.

Way back 25 or 30 years ago, I was allowed to sit and copy some of the original records at Cornish, sadly I only copied for my immediate family. My grandfather and grandmother, Louis and Sarah Suckle, lived in Prescott from about 1905 (presumed date of their marriage) until perhaps 1930 or 1936, when they moved to Texarkana, Texas. My mother, Helen Beatrice (later Bobbye) Suckle (later Ortiz) was born in Memphis, although the family was living in Prescott. They went to Memphis because of the hospital there. I know they lived in a small house and my grandfather at least for the first few years ran a clothing store or haberdashery called The New York Store. They were Jewish. I am very curious to find out details of any kind.

Seeking info on Chatham (Chatten, Chatam) Boyett. His patent for land in Nevada Co is dated 1848, 1849 and he appears in the Ouachita Co. Taylor Township 1850 census. That is where the trail ends. His wife and children reappear in Nacogdoches Tx by 1858 so it seems he died in Arkansas. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with any relevant information.

I'm looking for any information pertaining to the Baird's Chapel Cemetery. Although it is located just inside Hempstead County, we were hoping someone in Prescott may know a former church member who could help us locate a survey of the cemetery. My mother's baby sister was buried there in 1934 in an unmarked grave and she is trying to find some record of her burial. Any information would be appreciated.

Just reading your posting that was dated 2003. I hope you are still at this address. I have lived about a mile from Baird's Chapel Cemetery all my life (52 years). I have a cemetery book with listings from the cemetery, plus I can go look phyically. I know a man that lives about a 1/4 mile from cemetery that maybe I can talk to. If you would let me know the name or any names that might be around the grave, that would help.

I am looking for all of the Rowlands that are buried in this Cemetery. Would like to find someone to take a picture of Horace Perry Rowland, Willie L Rowland tombstone. Also all of the Chambless family that is buried there. And to check to see if there is a Jonah Little buried there.

I found in my cemetery book a H. P. Rowland born 1 Dec 1845, died 20 Nov 1900; a Willie L. Rowland born 17 Jul 1898, died 28 Apr 1918, 162 Dep Brig USA. There is a Eliza A. Little, 34 yrs, 31 Dec 1883, w/o J. W. Little. There are about 12 Chambless' listed. Do you need certain names of them? It will be a couple of days before I can get to the cemetery to take any pictures.

I am interested in the history of ARTESIAN COMMUNITY - OAKLAND SCHOOL at Artesian and ARTESIAN CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Are there

any records available?

I know of three old photos from the Artesian community that were printed in the Nevada County Picayune. A picture of the Artesian Church of Christ in 1937-38 appeared in the 9-23-1982 issue; a picture of an Oakland School group in 1917 appeared in the 1-27-1983 issue; and a picture of an Oakland School group in 1931 appeared in the 5-5-1983 issue.

These papers are at the Nevada County Library and are just stacked in the shelves. The library will soon be moving to a new building.

There is quite a lot of information on Rachel Cerene McKelvy Arnold is the Hesterly-McKelvy family book by Fred Looney. A copy

is in the Nevada County Library and the Ouachita County Library and I have a copy. This book shows Rachel Cerene and Andrew Jackson

Arnold with 8 children. It shows Luther Monroe and Rebecca Arnold with 9 children. It says Andrew Jackson Arnold is buried in a cemetery

near Camden, Arkansas. Do you happen to know which one? Rachel is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery in Nevada County.

Mary Arnold is Andrew J. Arnold's 2nd and final wife. She was born a Singleton, married in Hampton young, but divorced, and married again to John Edward Varley Nussey. They bore Albert Nussey and Eddie V. Nussey (female) in 1882 and 1885 respectively. Andrew J. is buried with Mary near Camden in a small private cemetery only about 2 miles north of town off Hwy. 24.

Can you tell me anything about John Edward Varley Nussey or how he died?

He is commemorated in my local cemetery in Leeds, Yorkshire, England and I wondered how he came to live and die in Camden.

My grandmother was born (we think) in Albany, Nevada County in 1878/79, found family in 1880 census she was showing as 1 year old, but nothing after that, her name Clara Wylie, Mother Ada, father James Wylie. Her gfather was JB "Old Doc" Sandefur from Hempstead county, she married CS Lowthorp in Hempstead County in 1898. Died in Hope AR in 1952. Any information on these familes would be greatly appreciated. She is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hope as is Old Doc and I think her brother Tap Wylie.

I am interested in any specifics on W.H. Prescott-Capt. of Co.F 24 Ark. CSA(wounded at Jenkins Ferry?) obit says-"lost leg in war" surveyed town for the r.r.,school super.,county judge 1875-1880.location of grave unknown.Wife Eliza.Also info. on men of co. F (later co. D/Hardys Ark.)

What funeral home was used in Nevada Co. Ar. in 1925?? Around the area of Morris and Friendship cemetery, trying to find death certificates for James T. and Mary Wicker (Ggrandparents) buried at Friendship Cemetery.

Cornish Funeral Home was probably the one. Brazzeal-Cornish Funeral Home is still in Prescott. Don't know if they have old burial records or not.

The funeral home that was used was probably Cornish, but there are no records left. The current owners of this funeral home threw them away when they moved the funeral home

It depends on your dates if you can get records. Try your local library for Desmond Wells Allen Arkansas Death Index. She has listings from 1914-1948. You might try contacting Brazzell/ Cornish for records. They have some if you can get them to search for you. Send me dates and I will see what I can do

Looking for the location of my aunts who were buried in DeAnn Cemetery in 1926.

Their names were Birdie Mae Crutchfield and Francis Elizabeth Crutchfield, children of Clarence and Edna (Moore)Crutchfield. We know that some people by the name of Townsend was allowed to use one of the burial plots they had and I think they were close to the fence. There are no tombstones on the graves and we are hoping to locate them so we can put some markers there.

Trying to find more information about the killing of Benjamin Dale Akers in a holdup about 24 September 1931. He ran a hamburger stand in Prescott.

Here is the newspaper article from The Nevada News dated 9-24-1931. No information was given regarding the actual holdup attempt.

guess there is no need to search old news papers . i am looking for a charles or charlie thornton. he was murdered in the thirties.. all old family members are dead. so i cant find any info.......

my mother, nor any of her sisters never talked about this murder, or talked about a brother name charlie..it was like he never existed...

i only found out at age fifty, when my aunt wanted to mention it to me.. all she said ... there was this brother named charlie and he was murdered. wouldnt say why. or any other info.

found out later that his name was john wallace thornton. he was born 1897 murderd in 1920..think this was in prescott
