Dr. Albert Seymour Buchanan


was born January 18, 1881, on a farm near Prescott, Nevada County, Ark. He was the 5th child of Chesley Marion Buchanan (b. Pulaski Tenn. Mar. 15, 1843) and his wife, Cora (Donnell) Buchanan (b. Aug. 22, 1850, in Columbus, Lyons County, Miss.) Chesley Marion Buchanan’s father (b. 1817) and mother (b. 1821) were natives of Pulaski, Tenn. Cora Donnell’s father was born in 1814. Her mother’s maiden name was "Austin" She died when Cora was born. Most of the Donnell family died in Memphis, Tenn., during the yellow fever epidemic.

Albert S. Buchanan graduated from High School at Prescott, then entered Arkansas Medical School at Little Rock, Ark. He was graduated there in 1905 after having served all four years as secretary of his class. He has done post graduate work at the Polyclinic in New York city on four different occasions -- 1906, 1908; 1913, 1927. He also studied in London, England 4 months at the Polyclinic, St. George's hospital. In 1924, he took a course at the Mayo Clinic.

On July 21, 1913, the Greeson Sanitarium was organized in Prescott by Dr. AS. Buchanan in conjunction with his brother, Dr. G.A. Buchanan. This, they operated until April 1, 1919, when they bought the Park Hotel on E. Front St. and converted it into a hospital. This was known as the Park Sanitarium. On Jan. 12, 1924, they opened their lovely, new hospital on E. 6th St. which they named Cora Donnell Hospital in honor of their mother.

Dr. AS. Buchanan has served as president of the Prescott Rotary Club, president of the Nevada County Medical Society, president of the Tri- county Medical Society, president of the Tri-State Medical Society (this composed of parts of Ark., La., and Texas), president of the Arkansas Medical Society, secretary of the State Board. He is a member of the Medical Society College of Surgeons. Has been Missouri- Pacific local surgeon since 1910. Was commissioner on the Blevins Highway; also Prescott Street Paving District number 4. Is a member of the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, Elder in the Presbyterian Church, and has been president of "The Men of the Church."

Dr. Buchanan was married March 19, 1908, to Ethel Tompkins, daughter or Hon. W. V. Tompkins and his wife, Helen (Poe) Tompkins. Two children were born of this union:

Katherine Donnell

One grandchild: Carl Dubose Dalrymple.
