Obituary: | Virda Marie Plyler McCain, age 103, of Bluff City, AR, passed away on May 6th, 2025, at Hillcrest Nursing home. Virda McCain was born August 19th, 1921, in Bluff City, AR, the daughter of Tom and Ibra House Plyler. Everyone who knew her found her to be a strong woman built for a tough country life who loved as hard as she worked. Her lifetime spanned the excess of the Roaring 20’s, the privation of the Great Depression, and the grim years of World War II. Virda went with her sister Mattie up North to sew parachutes for her country. Virda Plyler found true love with Thronwell “Green” McCain after the war. They married on October 6th, 1945, and toiled side by side to build a life and family. Mrs. McCain especially loved sewing, quilting, crocheting and crossword puzzles, and (to everyone’s delight) making pies. Her skill with a needle and thread were legendary and a source of fond memories for those in the family who learned the craft at her knee. Family members prized her creations and many children in Mexico received her hand-stitched clothing with gratitude. Mrs. McCain’s sharp wit and matter-of-fact tone left fond, enduring memories among the grandchildren. She instilled in Breanna a love of sewing and baking. She taught Leigh the value of a flyswatter for keeping kids in line. Lisa always admired how Grandma never failed to speak her mind. Remaining to cherish Virda’s memory are her children, Helen McCain Pate and husband Harold of Malvern and Mary McCain Hillery and husband Harley of Prescott, Arkansas; grandchildren, Tina Sumner Gill of Long Island, New York; Lisa Sumner Fisk and husband Matt of Lockesburg, Arkansas; Leigh Hillery Loe and husband Jeremy of Prescott, Arkansas; Also left behind are 7 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to list. Preceding her in death are her loving husband Thronwell McCain and granddaughter, Malissa Clark; parents, Tom and Ibra Plyler. Visitation will be held noon May 12th at Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1pm, with Bro. Neal Ridling officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery of Bluff City, Arkansas. Funeral services are under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott. |
